 7th ASIA-EUROPE MEETING
Lors de la conférence de l’A.S.E.M (7th ASEAN-EUROPE MEETING) qui s’est tenue le 24-25.10.2008 à Pekin dominée par la crise financière, un rapprochement certain s’est ressenti entre le Premier Ministre LAO, M. Bouasone BOUPHAVANH, et, le Président chinois, M. HU JIN TAO. Côte à côte, les deux hommes d'état ont montré une grande proximité. D’ailleurs, les relations entre les deux dirigeants semblent être au beau fixe. Le Laos va t-il jouer dans la cour des grands ?  Faut du temps et de patience ! Cependant,  il  est fort de constater que le Laos s’est assuré une place au chaud derrière son grand frère chinois pour se protéger de la crise. Désormais, on ne distingue plus le capitaliste du communiste, tous se mêlent. Chic-la globalisation !

(KPL) Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh last week received a courtesy call from Mr. Jean Louis BORLOO, Minister of State, Minister for Ecology, Energy, and Sustainable Development of France. Mr. BORLOO arrived here on 31 October for a short working visit in Laos. At the talks, P.M Bouasone praised and highly valued the visit to Laos of Mr. J. Louis BORLOO as a big contribution to further strengthening the friendly relation and co-operation between Laos and France. Mr. J. Louis BORLOO was also warmly received by Ms. Khempheng PHOLSENA, Minister to the Prime Minister's Office and Chairman of the Water Resource and Environment Agency. Mr. Jean Louis BORLOO on 1 November visited the Nam Theun II Hydropower Construction project jointly funded by the French Electric Company. The main objective of Mr. J. L.BORLOO's visit to Laos was to discuss with the Lao government on preparation for the United Nations Climate Change Conference Copenhagen 2009, especially on the issues of assistance for developing countries.

French businessmen to set up optic factory in Laos: (KPL) French businessmen are interested in setting up an optic factory in Vientiane. The statement was made by Mr Peter Covelier, Vice Chairman of Essi Lor Company, when he called on Mr Bounchanh Sinthavong, Deputy Mayor of Vientiane in Vientiane on 31 August. Laos simplifies import procedure: (Asia News Network) : Business people will find it simpler to import goods to Laos if a new prime ministerial decree on import procedures is enforced. The new legal document, which Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh signed in July, also aims to move Lao import procedures closer to the rules and regulations of the World Trade Organisation. The reforms form part of the main conditions for the country to become a member of the global trade group.

Thailand may be able to co-invest with Kuwait to grow rice in Laos in a form of contract farming. Laos made the proposal in talks between Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai and Nan Viyaketh, Laos' Minister of Industry and Commerce, said Ms Porntiva's chief adviser Chaiya Yimwilai. The pair met for talks during the four-day Asean Economic Ministers Meeting in Bangkok which ends today. Ms Porntiva liked the sound of the proposal and said the ministry would look at how to make it work.

The European Union (EU) is committed to giving extra funding to Laos to help the country deal with the global financial crisis, the Lao newspaper Vientiane Times reported Monday. According to David Lipman, Head of the European Committee Delegation to the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the EU decided to provide about 50 million U.S. dollars to Laos for the period 2010-2013.
